Cockburn Wetlands Precinct Redevelopment

A community and environmental education precinct at Bibra Lake Reserve, bringing The Wetlands Centre Cockburn, Native ARC wildlife rehabilitation, and the Bibra Lake Scouts together within a single integrated site. Delivered for the City of Cockburn through a combination of refurbishment, additions and new buildings, the redevelopment sites its facilities around a central open space and constructed wetland, concentrating the visitor experience within the surrounding native environment. The precinct comprises a new education room, administration and meeting facilities for the Wetlands Centre, an accredited native plant nursery, a purpose-built scouts hall, and a native animal veterinary hospital with internal and external enclosures and a dedicated animal education centre. Master planning connected previously segregated facilities whilst positioning new works to minimise clearing of the mature vegetation that defines the site. The project demonstrates how community infrastructure can support environmental conservation directly: rehabilitation, education and stewardship gathered around the wetland itself, within the Beeliar wetlands chain on Whadjuk Noongar country.
