Explore in the Atlas →Two volumes (1802 and 1805). Reduces design to a mécanisme de composition: a square grid, a kit of elements and an inventory of parts assembled by combinatorial rule. Durand also published the Recueil et parallèle des édifices de tout genre (1800), an early comparative-grid survey. Industrialises Quatremère's 'type' into a typological grid, feeding through to Rossi's Architecture of the City.
