The Primitive Hut

Explore in the Atlas →

Laugier's regulative idea (Essai sur l'architecture, 1753; Eisen frontispiece 1755) that all true architecture reduces to column, entablature and pediment, illustrated by a hut of living trees joined by a pediment of branches. An Enlightenment rather than ancient idea, later taken up by Quatremère, Semper and Rykwert's On Adam's House in Paradise (1972).
