Pupil of Boullée; professor at the École Polytechnique from 1795. Author of the Recueil et parallèle (1800) and the Précis des leçons d'architecture (1802–05), reducing design to a mécanisme de composition on a grid. Industrialises Quatremère's 'type' into an operative typological grid feeding through to Rossi.
