Notes

Co-author from 1896 of A History of Architecture on the Comparative Method; introduced the 'Tree of Architecture' in the 5th edition (1905); inherited the 'Non-Historical Styles' framing of the 4th edition (1901). The 'Tree of Architecture' illustration appears from the 4th edition (1901), not the 5th (1905). The 'Non-Historical Styles' peripheral placement of non-European traditions was established in the 4th edition; the 5th edition (1905) refined but did not originate the tree. Scholarly consensus (see Crinson & Lubbock; Cheng) attributes the full-page tree diagram to the 4th edition. Note also: Banister Flight Fletcher (the son) inherited joint authorship from his father Banister Fletcher Sr (1833–1899), who co-authored the first three editions.
