Ideoscape

Explore in the Atlas →

Appadurai's term for the global flow of ideologies and counter-ideologies — concatenations of images, often directly political, built around Enlightenment master-narratives such as freedom, welfare, rights, sovereignty, representation and democracy. As ideoscapes circulate and are translated across contexts, their keywords acquire divergent meanings, shaping the political imaginaries that legitimate (or contest) the institutions and built forms of the state.
