41 places shown
What this is
A directory of places in and around Melbourne / Naarm where you can make things: fabrication workshops, makerspaces, materials suppliers and specialist printers. It is aimed at students and independent makers who need one item made, not a production run.
What this is not
- Not a review site. There are no ratings and no user comments.
- Not ranked by popularity or by payment. No place has paid to be listed or to be placed higher.
- Not a quote service, and not affiliated with any place listed.
- Not a guarantee. Machines break, prices change and businesses close between checks.
Student fit
The student-fit score out of five is an editorial judgement about how workable a place is likely to be for a student with one thing to make. It is not a review score and says nothing about the quality of the work produced.
It weighs:
- public or student access
- affordability
- one-off suitability
- process relevance
- beginner support
- clarity of information
Scores derived by applying that rubric to the record are marked auto until a person has reviewed them.
Verification
Every record shows when its information was last checked and how good the evidence behind it is. Checking is not the same as guaranteeing. Before you travel, confirm with the provider directly:
- the machine you need is available and working
- the current price
- whether an induction is required, and when the next one runs
- that your material is approved
- the lead time
Where a record contradicts itself or could not be confirmed, it says so rather than hiding the gap.
Data notes
- Distances are straight-line distances from the origin you pick. They are not travel distances and not travel times.
- Coordinates are functional metadata for placing a marker on the map. The street address is the record; where the two disagree, trust the address.
